1. Decide on a Color Scheme
Choosing your color scheme should be one of your first steps in styling a shoot. The colors you choose need to work together and reflect both your brand and what you’re photographing. It can be hard to decide on just one or two colors, but try experimenting with different options until you find something that works well for your shoot. If all else fails, ask a friend or colleague who has great taste in fashion and design; they’ll know exactly what will look good. (Note: Don’t forget about white!)

2. Use Statement Pieces as Part of the Colour Scheme
Statement pieces like belts, hats and bags can be a great way to break up an otherwise monotone outfit, but picking a statement piece that’s not part of your ensemble’s colour scheme is often a better choice. For example, wearing a yellow trench coat with black tights is fine because there is some yellow in both items (the buttons). However, pairing green boots with a red top just doesn’t work because there isn’t any red in either item—they’re entirely different colours. In these cases, you should pair one more neutral piece with two bolder statement pieces; if you’re wearing bright orange boots and have an orange handbag as well, pair them with a simple white shirt and some navy blue trousers. It will tie together your look while keeping it chic.

3. Add Complementary Colors
When it comes to sit outs, it’s easy to fall into a simple color scheme. Black bottoms with a tank top? Navy bottoms with white tops? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. One of my favorite ways to add flair and create a focal point is through complementary colors—colors opposite each other on the color wheel. Instead of going all-navy or all-black for your sit out, try going navy and red or even black and orange (think: Halloween). Pops of bright colors are an excellent way to create visual interest without being too overbearing. Just make sure that whatever you wear at home has been approved by your program director!

4. Add Pattern
Stripes, plaids, polka dots—you can never go wrong with a good pattern on your suit. A pattern will automatically give your suit the more visual interest and personality. It’ll also break up a solid color and make it much more visually appealing and interesting. If you are wearing a single-color or 2-tone suit consider adding a complementary tie or pocket square to your outfit. You can even try playing with different combinations of patterns such as stripes + dots or checks + plaids. The idea is to take your single-color blazer out of corporate wear territory and give it some life!

5. Add Texture
Adding texture (e.g., beaded necklaces, fun socks) is a great way to add personality and elegance to your look without sacrificing comfort or making your outfit any less practical. When going for casual or dressy outfits, experiment with different textures in fabrics (e.g., cardigans vs. t-shirts), embellishments (e.g., embroidery), and colors (patterns). If you’re already comfortable dressing more on-trend and fashion-forward, opt for one texture throughout an entire outfit. The same goes for jewelry; don’t be afraid of mixing metals, colors, and styles if you want!

6. Add an Accent Piece
I love adding a quirky and unexpected piece of jewelry or accessory, like my green butterfly necklace. This is one of my favorite necklaces because it looks beautiful with my reddish-brown hair, and olive skin tone, and works for both casual and formal attire. In other words, it’s an all-purpose accent that makes me look like I’ve put more thought into what I’m wearing than I actually have! Sometimes simplicity is key when looking to add new pieces of flair. Simple accessories are easy to pull off while making you look polished at the same time. A simple bracelet or delicate ring can make all the difference in a casual outfit that otherwise would have gone unnoticed by others.
